The Young Apprentice – experience v education

Last week we saw the Young Apprentice back on our screens as twelve young candidates compete to impress Lord Sugar and win a £25,000 prize. The first episode, which aired last Thursday, saw the 16- and 17-year-old students split into two teams – girls and boys. They were tasked with making a profit from other people’s cast-offs, which involved sorting through bags of unwanted clothes and picking out the ones to sell at a car boot sale or a shopping mall. Not only did this involve washing them – which proved a challenge in itself – but decisions had to be made as to whether to customise the items to make them more appealing.

The boys’ team – Odyssey – was led by Patrick who runs his own fashion label and was keen to show off his creative side in the task. In contrast, Ashleigh was project manager of the girls’ team, Platinum, who made the bold decision not to alter any of the clothes. This paid off, as by not spending as much money, the girls had an overall profit of £453.36 compared to the boys’ £330.37.

The task was clearly about making money rather than designing. And, as much as I admire Patrick’s creative flair, did he honestly think anyone was going to buy the wetsuit/kimono? Luckily for him though, Lord Sugar saw his potential and fired 16-year-old Max instead who, despite being an A* student, was more of a thinker than a doer and failed to get stuck into the task.

This raised some interesting points. Max may have seemed like the perfect candidate on paper, but clearly Lord Sugar didn’t feel he had the right qualities to excel. So what’s more important for a business, highly qualified or highly experienced individuals?
